planning a wedding and getting married in Banff

To start planning a wedding in Banff National Park, we recommend booking your Banff wedding photographer first. As wedding photographers ourselves we can help you find the perfect ceremony spot to get married in Banff (especially if you’re eloping!) and connect you to all the best wedding vendors in the Canadian Rockies.

If you’re planning an elopement in Banff National Park, you can work with your photographer to find the best locations for you. All locations and viewpoints are open to the public in Banff National Park (provided you read the rules and respect the park), so you’ll have plenty of elopement spots to choose from.

getting legally married in Canada and Banff

If you plan to get legally married in Banff, you’ll need to hire an officiant appointed by the Government of Alberta and have two witnesses to sign the marriage license. Luckily we work as a husband-wife team for every elopement we photograph and are happy to sign as your two witnesses if you need! We’ve also worked with many officiants in the Canadian Rockies and can recommend our favourites to you as part of the unlimited consultation we offer as Banff wedding photographers.

where to get married in Banff National Park

Once you have your Banff wedding photographers booked, it’s time to start planning your adventure elopement! Here’s some of our favourite ideas on where to get married in Banff National Park.

Banff National Park wedding

For intimate weddings with guests, we recommend taking advantage of the mountain views at Tunnel Mountain Reservoir for your Banff wedding. Tunnel Mountain Reservoir is located right in the town of Banff, but it doesn’t feel like it! This spot overlooks Mount Rundle and is away from the main tourist area, making it quiet and serene. The central location of Tunnel Mountain Reservoir makes it easy to travel to one of Banff’s many restaurants for a reception party afterwards.

You can book Tunnel Mountain Reservoir through the Town of Banff.

Banff gondola wedding

Banff National Park has not one, but FOUR options of a Banff gondola wedding! If you want mountaintop views without hiking on your wedding day, a gondola is the way to go!

Check out the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain or Sunshine Village’s gondola for wedding options, or take a sightseeing chairlift at Lake Louise Ski Resort or Mt. Norquay!

Banff elopements

If you’re eloping in Banff National Park without guests (or only a handful of guests), you can go anywhere you like! We always recommend doing what you love for your elopement, whether it’s hiking, camping, kayaking, or beyond. If you love the mountains and want epic views or hidden gems for your elopement photos, we can help you find the perfect spots as your Banff wedding photographers.

when is the best time of year to get married in Banff National Park?

The Canadian Rockies offer something different for every season, and deciding when the best time of year to get married in Banff National Park will depend on what else you’d like to do while here. Here’s a quick overview of each season from our experience as Banff wedding photographers living in the Canadian Rockies year-round.

Spring

Spring is the shoulder season in Banff National Park between the busy summer tourist season and winter ski trips. The lakes are beginning to thaw and the temperatures are warming up from winter’s cold. The road to Moraine Lake, Canada’s most iconic viewpoint, opens in mid-May so you can beat the summer crowds by eloping in the spring.

The weather can be unpredictable for spring weddings, but some of the best photos Banff wedding photographers have captured come from stormy skies and windy days. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at this epic stormy elopement in Banff and the way the bride’s Rue de Seine wedding dress flowed in the wind.

Summer

Lakes as blue as Kool-aid and alpine meadows covered in wildflowers make Banff one of the best places to elope in the world, and summer is when they’re at their finest. Summer offers the most ceremony location options for Banff weddings, and you’ll never run out of things to do or trails to explore while on your trip.

Summer is peak tourist season in Banff, so don’t be surprised if the area feels a little crowded. Being local Banff wedding photographers, we can help you escape the crowds for your adventurous elopement while still getting incredible views.

Fall

Fall is one of the best times to visit Banff National Park! The mountains change to bright gold as the alpine larches begin to shed their needles and summer crowds thin with kids back in school. The days grow shorter and sunrise isn’t until about 7:00am, so if you plan on a sunrise hike for your elopement you don’t have to get up ridiculously early like in summer solstice!

Autumn is our favourite time of the year as Banff wedding photographers because the Rockies are quieter and hiking Larch Valley in the fall is unforgettable. Larches are usually at their peak gold colour towards the end of September, so plan your trip around then. Don’t be surprised by early snow storms while here, too!

Winter

Winter is often overlooked by couples planning a wedding in Banff National Park, but it is completely underrated. There are zero crowds, the mountains are quiet, and accommodations are discounted! If you’re willing to brave the cold, you’ll be rewarded with Banff wedding photos that are as magical as a Frozen movie. Plus, with endless snowshoe trails, skating rinks, and three ski hills (with apres-ski beer!), Banff National Park is truly a winter enthusiast’s dream!
